Darts Total Legs Betting: Over/Under Hit Rates by Match Format
Across 6,374 PDC televised-major matches, the standard total-legs lines lean slightly towards the under. Heavy favourites push that lean further.

Total legs is the market I come back to most in darts, because the line looks simple and the price often isn't. The question here is plain: how long do professional matches actually last, and how often do the usual over/under lines land? For live selections, head to today's darts tips. This study is the groundwork behind them.
The headline answer is that the common half-point lines sit very close to a coin flip but tilt towards the under. A first-to-6 match averages 9.17 legs, and over 9.5 legs lands in 45.9% of them. The first-to-10 line at 16.5 behaves the same way at 47.9%. That tilt gets sharper when one player is a strong favourite.
1Most first-to-6 matches run to 9, 10 or 11 legs
This is the shape of 2,343 first-to-6 matches, best of 11 legs. Whitewashes are rare: only 4.2% finished 6-0. The single most common result was 10 legs, a 6-4, in 24.2% of matches. A full 11-leg decider came up in 21.7%.
That spread matters because the 9.5 line splits the busiest part of the distribution. A 6-3 and a 6-4 sit either side of it, and both are common outcomes. One broken throw in the middle of a match is often the whole bet.

| Share of 2,343 matches (best of 11 legs) | |
|---|---|
| 6 legs (6-0) | 4.2% |
| 7 legs (6-1) | 11.5% |
| 8 legs (6-2) | 15.2% |
| 9 legs (6-3) | 23.2% |
| 10 legs (6-4) | 24.2% |
| 11 legs (6-5) | 21.7% |
What I take from this is that a deciding leg is a regular outcome rather than a freak one. More than a fifth of these matches went the distance. But the 6-3 and 6-4 scorelines still do most of the work, and the 9.5 line falls right between them.
2Standard total-legs lines lean slightly towards the under
Here are the hit rates and fair odds for every format, with no bookmaker margin. In first-to-6 matches, over 8.5 legs landed 69.1% of the time, which is a fair price of 1.45. The 9.5 line drops to 45.9%, so a fair over is 2.18 and a fair under is 1.85. Over 10.5 needs a decider and landed 21.7%, which is 4.60 fair.
The longer formats tell the same story. First-to-10 matches averaged 16.09 legs and went over 16.5 in 47.9% of 1,037 matches. First-to-5 went over 7.5 in 46.5%, and first-to-11 went over 18.5 in 44.8% of 143 matches.
| Format | Matches | Avg legs | Line | Over hit | Fair over | Fair under |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| First to 5 legs | 611 | 7.33 | 7.5 | 46.5% | 2.15 | 1.87 |
| First to 5 legs | 611 | 7.33 | 8.5 | 24.7% | 4.05 | 1.33 |
| First to 6 legs | 2,343 | 9.17 | 8.5 | 69.1% | 1.45 | 3.24 |
| First to 6 legs | 2,343 | 9.17 | 9.5 | 45.9% | 2.18 | 1.85 |
| First to 6 legs | 2,343 | 9.17 | 10.5 | 21.7% | 4.60 | 1.28 |
| First to 10 legs | 1,037 | 16.09 | 15.5 | 62.1% | 1.61 | 2.64 |
| First to 10 legs | 1,037 | 16.09 | 16.5 | 47.9% | 2.09 | 1.92 |
| First to 10 legs | 1,037 | 16.09 | 17.5 | 31.8% | 3.14 | 1.47 |
| First to 11 legs | 143 | 17.71 | 17.5 | 55.9% | 1.79 | 2.27 |
| First to 11 legs | 143 | 17.71 | 18.5 | 44.8% | 2.23 | 1.81 |
The caveat that matters most sits here. The records are missing two World Championship editions, and the first-to-5 and first-to-11 samples are smaller and drawn from fewer events. So I trust the first-to-6 and first-to-10 rows far more than the outer two.
3Strong favourites drag matches below the overs line
To test whether mismatches shorten games, I split matches from 2016 onward by the favourite's pre-match win expectation. That expectation comes from a simple Elo model built only from these televised-major results, so treat it as an illustrative rating rather than a market price. In first-to-6 matches, over 9.5 legs landed 45.3% of the time with a favourite under 60%, and 43.7% with an 80%+ favourite.
The effect is much clearer over the longer distance. In first-to-10 matches, over 16.5 legs hit 52.1% when the favourite was under 60%. That fell to 43.6% when the favourite was rated 80%+.
View the data: overs by how strong the favourite is
| First to 6: over 9.5 legs | First to 10: over 16.5 legs | |
|---|---|---|
| Favourite under 60% (1,342 / 443 matches) | 45.3% | 52.1% |
| 60-70% (525 / 274 matches) | 47.6% | 46.0% |
| 70-80% (286 / 175 matches) | 47.2% | 44.0% |
| 80%+ (142 / 101 matches) | 43.7% | 43.6% |
The first-to-6 bands barely move, with the middle bands a touch higher than either end. The first-to-10 line, though, slides steadily as the favourite gets stronger. More legs give the better player more room to pull away, and that is where the edge shows itself.
4First-to-6 match length has barely moved since 2015
Darts has got deeper and the scoring has got heavier, so I wanted to see whether matches have become longer or shorter. The average first-to-6 match lasted 9.1 legs in 2015 and 9.4 legs in 2026. Every year in between stays inside that narrow band.
View the data: average total legs, first-to-6 matches
| First to 6 legs | |
|---|---|
| 2015 | 9.1 legs |
| 2016 | 9.1 legs |
| 2017 | 9.2 legs |
| 2018 | 9 legs |
| 2019 | 9.1 legs |
| 2020 | 9.1 legs |
| 2021 | 9 legs |
| 2022 | 9.2 legs |
| 2023 | 9.1 legs |
| 2024 | 9.3 legs |
| 2025 | 9.1 legs |
| 2026 | 9.4 legs |
That stability is useful. A line set around 9.5 is not chasing a moving target, so these historical hit rates hold up reasonably well as a baseline. The later years tick up slightly, which is something I keep an eye on, but it isn't a trend I'd lean on yet.
Betting notes
- Price the 9.5 line properly. Over 9.5 legs in first-to-6 matches landed 45.9% of the time, which is a fair under of 1.85. If an under is offered near even money, it is worth a close look before you dismiss it.
- Fade overs in mismatches. In first-to-10 matches with an 80%+ favourite, over 16.5 legs hit only 43.6%, against 52.1% in close contests. Check how strong the favourite is before backing a long match.
- Trust the bigger samples. The first-to-6 rows rest on 2,343 matches, but the first-to-11 rows rest on just 143. Weight your confidence accordingly, and don't treat any of this as a system that guarantees results.
