NFL Underdogs: Should You Bet the Moneyline or the Spread?

Years of closing prices show the points protect an underdog bettor at almost every spread size. The gap is widest at +7 and in double digits.

When readers of my free NFL tips page like an underdog, the next question is nearly always the same: take it straight up or take the points? The moneyline feels like the brave, high-payout option. The spread feels like insurance. I wanted to know which one actually paid at closing prices, band by band, rather than trusting either instinct.

The headline is plain. Across 5,290 underdog sides from 2006 to 2025, flat stakes on every moneyline returned −2.9%, while the same sides on the spread returned +0.2%. That overall gap hides a lot of structure, though. Around the key number of +3 the moneyline held its own, and at +7 and +10 or more it fell apart.

1The spread beats the moneyline in most bands

This chart lines up both returns for each closing-spread band, with the all-underdogs total at the bottom. In four of the six bands the spread finished ahead or level. The two bets were identical at −0.8% for +3.5 to +6.5 and almost identical for +1 to +2.5, where the moneyline returned 0.0% and the spread +0.3%.

The bars that matter are the long ones. At +7 the moneyline lost −14.9% against −4.6% on the spread, and at +10 or more it was −18.4% against −0.7%. Those two bands account for most of the overall moneyline deficit.

The one band where both bets made money was +3, with the moneyline at +5.4% and the spread at +6.2%. Even there, the points edged it.

2Big underdogs win less often than their prices imply

Here I compare the win chance implied by the closing moneyline, with margin removed, against how often the underdog actually won. For most bands the two dots sit almost on top of each other: +3.5 to +6.5 was priced at 33.3% and won 33.8%, and +7.5 to +9.5 was priced at 23.2% and won 23.5%. That is a market pricing outright wins well.

The misses fall in the same places as the losses. Underdogs of +7, at a median moneyline of +269, were priced at 26.5% and won only 22.8%. Underdogs of +10 or more, at a median of +490, were priced at 16.1% and won 13.8%. On the other side, +3 underdogs at a median of +141 were priced at 40.4% and won 43.4%.

+10 or more (696 games · ML median +490)16.1%13.8%±2.7

The error bars matter, and this is the main caveat. These are closing prices only, and in the smaller bands a few upsets either way can shift returns by several points. I read the +7 shortfall as a lean worth respecting, not a law.

3Cover rates stay near even while outright wins collapse

The table puts the full picture in one place. Outright win rates drop steadily from 46.8% for +1 to +2.5 down to 13.8% for +10 or more. Cover rates barely move. Every band covers somewhere between 49.4% and 54.4% of decided spreads.

That is the whole argument for the points in one table. The spread is built to make each side close to a coin flip, so a mispriced team costs you little. The moneyline asks you to be right about a rare event, and when the market overprices that event, as it did at +7 and in double digits, the cost is severe.

+10 or more69613.8%51.6%−18.4%−0.7%

The +3 row stands out on both counts: 43.4% outright and a 54.4% cover rate. The key number protected underdogs that lost by a field goal, and it also sat at a price where outright wins came in above the market's estimate.

4Road underdogs on the spread were the better side

Splitting by venue, both groups lost on the moneyline. Home underdogs returned −3.7% and road underdogs −2.4%. On the spread, road underdogs across 3,395 games returned +1.4%, while home underdogs across 1,895 games returned −1.9%.

I don't treat this as a standalone angle, because the margins are thin. It does fit a pattern I see on tape. The home underdog tends to attract sentiment that pushes the number slightly too short, while the travelling team getting points is often priced a touch more generously than its line play deserves.

Betting notes

  • Default to the points. Across all underdogs the spread returned +0.2% against −2.9% on the moneyline, and cover rates held near even in every band. Treat the moneyline as the exception you have to justify.
  • Avoid +7 moneylines. Underdogs of +7 won 22.8% against a priced 26.5%, and the moneyline returned −14.9%. If you like a seven-point underdog, take the points, which lost far less at −4.6%.
  • Respect the +3 key number. At +3 the moneyline returned +5.4% and the spread +6.2%, with outright wins at 43.4%. This is the one band where a straight-up underdog has a historical case, but the points still edged it.
