Tennis Total Games Over/Under: Hit Rates for Every Line
Across 114,509 completed tour-level matches, the familiar 22.5 line goes under more often than it goes over, and the favourite's price tells you more than the surface does.

Total games is the market I'm asked about most, and it's the one where the average misleads people most often. ATP best-of-3 matches averaged 23.2 games and WTA matches 21.7, so a line around 22.5 looks like a coin flip. It isn't. The distribution is lumpy, pulled one way by straight-set routs and the other by deciders, and the median sits below the mean on both tours.
The headline answer is that over 22.5 games landed in 44.6% of ATP best-of-3 matches and 37.3% of WTA matches. That covers ATP play from 2000 and WTA from 2007, using completed matches with full set scores. The same reasoning sits behind the totals angles on my free tennis picks page. Below I go line by line, then show what moves a total away from those baselines.
1Best-of-3 totals cluster low with a long tail
The heatmap splits every completed best-of-3 match into bands of total games. On the ATP side the most common band is 19-20 games at 16.6%, which is roughly what a routine straight-sets win produces. Yet 22.6% of ATP matches reached 29 games or more, so there is a heavy cluster at the far end that comes from tight deciders and tiebreaks.
The WTA shape leans further towards the short end. 19.6% of WTA matches finished in 16 games or fewer, about twice the ATP share of 10.2%. Breaks of serve come more readily on the women's tour, and one-sided sets close quickly.
View the data: how many games a best-of-3 match lasts
| ATP | WTA | |
|---|---|---|
| 16 or fewer | 10.2% | 19.6% |
| 17-18 | 15.3% | 18.1% |
| 19-20 | 16.6% | 14.7% |
| 21-22 | 13.3% | 10.3% |
| 23-24 | 7.1% | 5.9% |
| 25-26 | 8.3% | 7.5% |
| 27-28 | 6.6% | 7.3% |
| 29 or more | 22.6% | 16.7% |
This is why the ATP median of 22 sits below the 23.2 average. The long tail drags the mean upwards, but the typical match finishes short of it. If you anchor on the average alone, you will lean towards the over more often than the results justify.
2Over 22.5 lands less than half the time on both tours
The table gives the over hit rate for every line from 19.5 to 24.5, along with the fair price that rate implies with no margin. On the ATP, the line closest to an even split is 21.5, which went over 52.3% of the time (fair 1.91). On the WTA the nearest equivalent is 20.5 at 47.6%, which means the fair over price is 2.10.
Look at the step from 23.5 to 24.5 on the ATP: 39.0% to 37.5%, a much smaller drop than between the lower lines. That follows from the heatmap, because the 23-24 band is thin at 7.1%. Few matches finish there. Once a match passes the mid-twenties it has usually gone to a decider and tends to keep climbing.
| Line | ATP over | ATP fair over | WTA over | WTA fair over |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 19.5 | 65.7% | 1.52 | 54.4% | 1.84 |
| 20.5 | 57.9% | 1.73 | 47.6% | 2.10 |
| 21.5 | 52.3% | 1.91 | 42.8% | 2.34 |
| 22.5 | 44.6% | 2.24 | 37.3% | 2.68 |
| 23.5 | 39.0% | 2.56 | 33.7% | 2.97 |
| 24.5 | 37.5% | 2.67 | 31.5% | 3.17 |
My reading is that a quoted over 22.5 on a WTA match needs to be close to the fair 2.68 before it deserves attention, whatever the names on the card. One caveat applies to everything here. These are historical tour-level rates, not a system, and the past offers no guarantee about the next match.
3Closer prices mean longer matches, up to a point
Here the average total is plotted against the closing price of the favourite. With a favourite under 1.15, ATP matches averaged 21.0 games and WTA matches 19.2. At the other end, with a favourite at 1.90-2.00, the averages rise to 24.0 and 22.9.
The effect on the line is large. Over 22.5 landed 29.2% of the time in ATP matches with a favourite under 1.15, and 50.2% with a favourite at 1.90-2.00. The same line behaves like a different market depending on how lopsided the contest is.
View the data: average total games by favourite price
| ATP | WTA | |
|---|---|---|
| Under 1.15 | 21 games | 19.2 games |
| 1.15-1.29 | 22.6 games | 21 games |
| 1.30-1.49 | 23.4 games | 22 games |
| 1.50-1.69 | 23.7 games | 22.3 games |
| 1.70-1.89 | 23.9 games | 22.4 games |
| 1.90-2.00 | 24 games | 22.9 games |
The curve does most of its climbing at the short-priced end and flattens from the 1.30-1.49 bracket onwards, where the ATP averages run 23.4, 23.7, 23.9 and then 24.0. Once a match is reasonably competitive, the price adds less information. Past that point I want to know about fatigue, conditions and match-up.
4Grass adds games, but less than price does
Surface matters, though more gently than people assume. ATP grass matches averaged 23.9 games, against 23.3 on hard and 22.8 on clay. On grass, serve holds more easily, which brings more tiebreaks and longer sets. On clay, returners break more often and sets can fold faster.
The WTA spread is narrower still: grass 22.2, hard 21.7, clay 21.6. Hard and clay are almost indistinguishable on the women's tour.
View the data: average games by surface
| Completed best-of-3 matches | |
|---|---|
| ATP hard | 23.3 games |
| ATP clay | 22.8 games |
| ATP grass | 23.9 games |
| WTA hard | 21.7 games |
| WTA clay | 21.6 games |
| WTA grass | 22.2 games |
Set beside the price chart, the surface gaps look modest. On the ATP the difference between grass and clay is smaller than the difference between a heavy favourite and a near pick'em. I treat surface as a small adjustment applied after reading the match-up, not the starting point.
Betting notes
- Start from the median. The ATP median is 22 games against a 23.2 average, and the WTA median is 20 against 21.7. Use the hit-rate table rather than the mean when judging a line.
- Check the favourite's price. With an ATP favourite under 1.15, over 22.5 landed only 29.2% of the time. A big mismatch should push you towards the under unless the quoted price already reflects it.
- Respect the WTA short end. 19.6% of WTA matches finished in 16 games or fewer. Demand a price near the fair 2.68 before backing a WTA over 22.5.
Quick answers
How often does over 22.5 games hit in tennis?
Over 22.5 landed in 44.6% of completed ATP best-of-3 matches and 37.3% of WTA matches. That implies fair over prices of 2.24 and 2.68 respectively.
What is the average number of games in an ATP or WTA match?
ATP best-of-3 matches averaged 23.2 games (median 22) and WTA matches averaged 21.7 (median 20). ATP best-of-5 matches averaged 36.3 games, although a few long advantage final sets at older Grand Slams inflate that figure.
Do grass court matches have more games?
Slightly. ATP grass matches averaged 23.9 games against 22.8 on clay, and WTA grass averaged 22.2 against 21.6 on clay. The favourite's price moves totals more than surface does.
